Located close to Leidseplein’s bustling nightlife, the hotel’s theme is music: snare drum light fittings, theatre mirrors, posters and musical instruments. The rooms are squeaky clean, comfortable and stylishly designed. All rooms come with a TV, free Wi-Fi and an ipod station. Rooms are available with either private or shared bathrooms. Rooms in front have canal views, a few even have cute balconies. There’s no elevator and the stairs are steep. Breakfast is 6.50 Euros. Bonus: a pool table and a nice bar in the lobby.

Located on a quaint canal in the lovely Jordaan, Van Onna offers 41 spotless, cozy and quiet rooms at reasonable prices. The rooms have no amenities, though all of them come with clean private bathrooms. Rooms in front have canal views but for fabulous views of the city get one of the attic rooms. It’s worth the walk up the steep stairs. Breakfast is included. The Anne Frank House is steps away and the cafes, bars and galleries aren’t too far either. Food tip: For the best spare ribs in town, head to De Reiger nearby (Nieuwe Leliestraat 34).

Shelter Jordaan is one of the best hostels in the city, if not the best. It’s clean, safe, fun and is located in a great neighbourhood close to the Anne Frank House. It has private rooms (4, 5, 6, 8 beds) and 2 mixed dorms (12 to 20 beds). Most private rooms are singe sex. The 4-bed rooms have private bathrooms; the rest share facilites (separate for men and women). All bathrooms are spotless. There’s also a relaxing lounge, a lovely courtyard and a café which serves snacks and dinner (5 Euros). Breakfast is included.

If you want to stay in the centre without going broke, Aspen is a good choice. Located just minutes away from the Anne Frank House, Royal Palace and Dam Square, it’s as central as it gets. The rooms are basic (only telephone) but clean, comfortable and inexpensive. Rooms have private or shared bathrooms. The rooms facing the back are quieter, while those facing the street can be noisy but have nice views. There’s no breakfast. Rooms are spread across 3 floors (no elevator) and the stairs are steep. That should keep you from coming back drunk.

Hoksbergen sits on one of the prettiest canals in all Amsterdam and it’s also close to the tourist sights, the restaurants and the shopping. Its 14 rooms are basic and small with simple décor but are well maintained. All rooms come with a TV, telephone, Wi-Fi and private bathrooms (small again). Rooms in front have pretty canal views. Stairs are steep, breakfast is not (it’s included and good). The hotel also rents 5 apartments nearby which are perfect for families. Hoksbergen delivers on all counts, especially location.

Located on the same street as Hotel Aspen, the friendly Clemens is an excellent budget option in the centre. Rooms come in two types, Deluxe (with private bathrooms) and Budget (smaller and with shared bathrooms). Both are spotless, cozy and well maintained. All rooms have TV, telephone, mini-fridge and free Wi-Fi (you can rent a laptop for 8 Euros a day). Rooms 7 and 8, have balconies with nice views. Breakfast is 7 Euros and good. Floors? 4. Elevator? No. Are the stairs steep? Is the earth round?

A little further from Clemens and within touching distance of the canal, the 48 room Nadia is a real find. The rooms are small but spotless, charming and well equipped: TV, telephone, fridge, tea / coffee making facilities, free Wi-Fi and tidy private bathrooms. Most rooms have canal views (including the breakfast room), some even have balconies with a canal view. Breakfast is included, staff is friendly and the location is super central. There’s no elevator and the stairs are steep, other than that Nadia is perfect.

The staff is helpful and the location is picturesque and central: on the Herengracht canal and close to Anne Frank House, Dam Square and the shopping. The rooms in front have nice views of the canal and some rooms have private bathrooms (the cheaper ones share facilities). Breakfast is included. If you’re willing to sacrifice space and amenities for comfort and charm, you’ll love Hegra.

Street facing rooms have lovely balconies with nice views of the city; those at the back overlook a courtyard and are quieter. Rooms come with a TV, mini-fridge, free Wi-Fi and have private or shared bathrooms, both are spotless. Internet is 3 Euros for 30 minutes. No breakfast and no elevator. The staff is very friendly, the stairs are not.

Brouwer is small and utterly charming. All its 8 rooms have beautiful views over the canal and it’s close to some of the major tourist sights. Internet is free, breakfast is included and tiny lift takes you up and down. Perfect. Food tip: For fresh and delicious home baked cakes, muffins and scones, drop in at Greenwoods close by (Singel 103).

Located on the canal close to many restaurants and bars, Prinsenhof’s 11 rooms have no amenities except for a radio. But they’re spic and span and comfortable with high beamed ceilings and nice antique furniture. Only 2 rooms have private bathrooms, including the cute attic room. All rooms, except one, have views of the canal or the back garden. Breakfast is included. The stairs are steep but there’s a pulley to haul your luggage up and down. Prinsenhof is good value for money in a nice location.

Rembrandt’s rooms are on the smaller side, have narrow beds and can get noisy. On the upside, the location is fantastic, near the Rembrandt Square, surrounded by the best of Amsterdam’s nightlife. The rooms are spotless, renovated, inexpensive and come with a TV, kettle and free Wi-Fi. All rooms share bathrooms, 2 per room. The bathrooms are clean and decent sized. Breakfast is included and quite good. Overall, great location, tidy place but it’s not for everyone. Oh, by the way, the stairs are steep.

Keizerhof is more like a B&B than a hotel. It’s cozy and located on a quaint canal street, close to the bars and restaurants. Its 5 rooms (even though it says 4 on the website), have nice views of the canal or the wonderful lush garden in the back. The rooms are clean and spacious, with simple décor and have a TV and tea/coffee maker. Rooms are of 3 types, with private bathroom, with only shower (toilet in the hallway) and with shower and toilet in the hallway. The included breakfast, with pancakes, is excellent.

La Bohème’s rooms are small with boring décor but its welcome is warm and its location super central: just meters away from Leidseplein’s vibrant nightlife, the museums and Vondelpark. The rooms are spotless and come with equally spotless and tiled private bathrooms (single rooms have shared facilities). All rooms have a TV, telephone and free Wi-Fi. Rooms facing the street can get noisy, so if you’re a light sleeper ask for a room facing the back. Included in the price: a good breakfast, a helpful staff and a cute cat.

Titus is not perfect, but it has the cheapest rooms (breakfast included) in the city center. Nicely located, overlooking a canal and steps away from Leidseplein’s restaurants and nightlife, it has 19 basic but clean rooms with TV and telephone. Some rooms have nice canal views. Rooms come with private or shared bathroom (we recommend getting a room with a private bathroom). Internet is free, staff is helpful. On the downside, stairs are steep and walls are thin. Titus is a very good bet if you’re not too demanding.

Tucked away on a quiet path inside Vondelpark, Stayokay is near the museums and not too far from Leidseplein. The private rooms and dorms are clean and modern in design. Rooms have private bathrooms and female only dorms are available. The common lounge has internet (3 Euros per hour), TV and a pool table. Wi-Fi is free and the included breakfast is very good. The hostel bar also whips up cheap dinners which are quite decent. Towels are 3.50 Euros. If you’re young and on a tight budget, Stayokay works well.

A nice breakfast is included and served in the room. Staff is friendly and the hotel is well connected to the rest of the city by tram (Leidseplein can be done by foot). Stairs are steep but the higher you go the better the views.

If you’re not fussy about staying in the centre, you’ll be rewarded with a wonderful stay at the charming Collector B&B, run by friendly Karel. It’s close to the museums and just a short tram ride away from the centre. The 3 rooms are clean, big and beautifully done up. Rooms have a TV, a lovely balcony and clean private bathrooms. Internet and a make-your-own-breakfast are free (Karel stocks up the kitchen with every possible breakfast food, including eggs from his own chickens). Two thumbs up for the Collector.
