Staying at Peters is like staying with a friend. It’s homely and the friendly owners go out of their way to help. The 34 rooms are basic but clean, comfortable and large. All rooms have a TV, free Wi-Fi and good sized private bathrooms. 3 rooms come with a balcony. Super large family rooms are also available. The pension is located close to Savignyplatz which is green and pleasant. There are also quite few eateries in the area. Breakfast is included. There’s no elevator. With just 10 rooms, Ingeborg is intimate and cosy. It has a charming reception and breakfast room, with potted plants, antique furniture, chandeliers and little curios. The location is super, a leafy residential lane near the cafes, restaurants, Kurfürstendamm and the Savignyplatz S-Bahn. The rooms are well-maintained, comfortable and have warm, old style décor which is different in each room. The rooms have a TV, free Wi-Fi and clean private or shared bathrooms. There’s complimentary tea, coffee and cookies available all day. Two thumbs up for Ingeborg. Food tip: For great Turkish food, try Restaurant Mey (Bleibtreustrasse 47).

Majesty is a small pension with a cute front garden on the serene Mommsenstrasse. Set in a beautiful Wilhelminian style house, its 12 rooms have slightly old fashioned décor but they are well-maintained, spacious and inexpensive. Majesty is located close to Hotel Pension Ingeborg (above), so it enjoys all the benefits of a great location that Pension Ingeborg does. Overall, Majesty is good value for money.

Set in a charming old building, Aida is a cozy little place with a quiet and super convenient location: close to the Savignyplatz S-Bahn, the restaurants and Ku’damm. Family run Bregenz is a warm and welcoming place on a pretty residential street. And friendly Christian, the owner, is a great source of information. The rooms are spotless, large, quiet and well-equipped: TV, telephone, mini bar, free Wi-Fi. The décor is functional but it gets the job done. Rooms have private or shared bathrooms. Both clean and good sized. 2 double rooms have balconies. The included breakfast is good, internet is 1 Euro for 30 minutes. Ku’damm and the Adenauerplatz U-Bahn are nearby. Perfect.

If you want character, Bogota has it in spades. Housed in a historical building (formerly a Nazi Cultural Centre), this Berlin legend enjoys a prime location: just off Ku’damm. The rooms are a mixed bag, they range from the dated to the utterly charming (also renovated and larger). All rooms are clean, have high ceilings and telephones; most rooms also have a TV and tidy private bathrooms. Cheaper rooms share facilities. Breakfast is included and Wi-Fi is 2 Euros per hour. Bogota is old world charm at its best.

The rooms at Berlin Plaza are on the smaller side, but if you’re willing to overlook that, you’ll be in for a nice surprise. The location is prime, just off Ku’damm. You can even access free internet via the TV (keyboard provided by the hotel). Rooms with balconies are also available. Breakfast is included and is outstanding, so is the hotel’s restaurant cum bar. Berlin Plaza is a very good bet.

Markischer’s location is one of the best in East Berlin. Near the cafes, bars, restaurants and close to both, Oranienburger U-Bahn and Oranienburger S-Bahn. The rooms have drab décor but they’re clean, large and inexpensive. Rooms have a TV, telephone and private bathrooms. There’s no Wi-Fi (Espresso Ambulanz across the street has free Wi-Fi). The 5 Euro breakfast is good. The price and location make Markischer worth it. Food tip: For the best falafel in Berlin, drop in at Dada Falafel (Linienstrasse 132).

Circus has it all: dorms, rooms with private bathrooms and fully loaded apartments with balconies and nice views. All new, clean, airy with stylishly decor. Dorm beds even have tiny wardrobes with a power point. Sweet. Showers are tidy and plenty. There’s a funky bar and a café which whips up snacks, meals and breakfast (2.50 to 5 Euros). Wi-Fi is free (you can rent a laptop for 2 Euros per hour). The location is the icing on the cake: steps away from the restaurants, bars, galleries and the Rosenthaler Platz U-Bahn.

Owned by the people who run Circus Hostel, Circus Hotel is one of Berlin’s best bets. Located opposite the hostel, its individually designed rooms and suites would put more expensive hotels to shame. Big, comfortable and chic in design and decor, they come with a TV, telephone, Wi-Fi, dark wood flooring and private bathrooms with great showers. Suites have a terrace. Breakfast is 4 Euros. Bonus: A lovely inner courtyard and a fabulous restaurant cum bar. The hotel also has apartments which are equally good.

Transit is good value for money in the multi-cultural and café filled Kreuzberg. An old factory turned into a hotel, its tidy single and double rooms are simple but elegant in décor (a few have balconies). There’s no TV or telephone but the room size, price and immaculate private bathrooms make up for it. The hotel also has spic and span dorms (3 to 6 beds) with shared facilities. No bunk beds, thankfully. The cafes, bars and the Mehringdamm U-Bahn are very close by. Breakfast is included. Bonus: a nice 24 hour bar.

EastSeven maybe low on fun but it’s clean, friendly and well located: near the Senefelderplatz U-Bahn and the nightlife. The quality of private rooms and dorms is top notch: comfortable, tastefully done up and airy. Shared bathrooms are tidy. There’s also a cozy lounge, a cute back garden and a well-equipped kitchen for guest use. Handy since there’s no breakfast. Coffee/ tea is available for .50 Euros and there’s free dinner on Mondays. Internet is .50 Euros for 20 minutes or 15 minutes free with every warm drink.

Alex is not right in the heart of the action but there’s a tram stop just outside, while Alexanderplatz and the eateries are a short walk away. Internet, coffee, tea and hot chocolate is free (24/7). Staff is friendly and there’s a lovely park next door. Overall, Alex is impressive. It also has fully equipped apartments which are equally impressive.
