Medosz’s super location and low rates make it one of the best value for money deals in the city. It’s steps away from Oktogon metro, the bars and restaurants of Ferenc Liszt Square, the pubs and theatres of Nagymező utca and the grand Andrassy Avenue which is lined with boutiques and gorgeous mansions. The rooms are not big but they’re clean and comfortable. The standard rooms feel dated, while the superior ones are newly renovated and have better décor (recommended). Housed in a refurbished 18th century building, Pest is located in the heart of Budapest. Most of its rooms open into a lush green inner courtyard, where ivy plants drape a wrought iron railing and the building exterior. The rooms are spacious and clean, with minimal furniture. The location is gold, a short walk from St. Stephen’s Basilica, Opera House, Andrassy Avenue and Opera metro. The included breakfast is very good, so is the staff. Home-Made is cozy and intimate. It has just 3 dorms and 2 double rooms, all are spotless. The décor is cool: funky furniture, hand-made lamps and old suitcases converted into shelves. One double room has a TV and private bathroom. The dorms have single beds instead of bunk beds and the shared bathrooms are clean. There’s also a guest kitchen and free internet. There’s no breakfast but there’s free tea / coffee all day and a tasty free dinner on Tuesdays. The location is good, close to Andrassy Avenue, the nightlife of Nagymező utca and Ferenc Liszt Square and Oktogon metro.

If location is your priority then you’ll love Leo Panzio. It sits close to Vaci Utca, the city’s main shopping street which is packed with stores and restaurants. And the Ferenciek tere metro is right outside the hotel, so is an ATM. The rooms have loud décor and are smallish, but they’re charming, squeaky clean and comfortable. 3 rooms have balconies with views of the Danube. Note: Rooms facing the inner courtyard can be a bit dark, so get a street facing room.

The lovely Gerloczy is one of our favourite hotels in the city. A grand winding staircase (there’s also an elevator) leads you to super charming and stylishly done-up rooms with high ceilings. The rooms are also large, airy and come with a TV, telephone, air-conditioning, mini bar, free Wi-Fi and spotless private bathrooms. 2 rooms have cute balconies. The location is very central, near Vaci utca, the Jewish synagogue and Astoria metro. The 12 Euro breakfast is delicious and is served at the hotel’s restaurant, which also has an excellent lunch and dinner menu, and a shaded outdoor area.

Set in an old apartment block, Green Bridge has enough good stuff that’ll make you want to come back: spotless dorms and private rooms, single beds instead of bunk beds, cozy and eye pleasing décor, clean bathrooms, free internet, free coffee all day, an impressive DVD library and a warm welcome. Besides, the location is fabulous: a quiet street only meters from the Danube and a short walk away from the bars and cafes of Raday utca. There’s no breakfast. The hostel also has a guest kitchen. Green Bridge gets our vote for the sweetest hostel in Budapest.

Pilvax is located on a quiet pedestrian only lane a short walk away from the Danube, Ferenciek tere metro and Vaci utca. So the location gets an A plus. The rooms are not too bad either; they’re basic with functional décor but they’re spacious and sunny, thanks to the big windows. The amenities are impressive, all rooms come with a TV, telephone, air-conditioning, fridge, radio, free Wi-Fi and private bathrooms. Internet at the reception is free. There’s no elevator and the 6 Euro breakfast is so-so. We suggest you skip the breakfast and hit the cafes close by.

Butterfly Home puts you in the heart of Pest minus the noise. Set on a quiet street, this new B&B has picture worthy rooms. Immaculate and large, they’re tastefully done up, with elegant décor. The location is prime, near the Kalvin ter metro, Vaci utca and the nightlife of Raday utca. The included breakfast is fresh and delicious. With 123 rooms Erzsebet is not small, but don’t let that put you off. This friendly hotel is a good option in a very central location. It sits on a pedestrian street meters away from Vaci Utca and the Ferenciek tere metro. The rooms vary from cramped to spacious, so ask ahead. Though, all are well maintained and comfortable, with pleasant décor. They come with a TV, telephone, air-conditioning, mini bar and private bathrooms. Rooms on the higher floors have nice views over Buda (recommended). Breakfast is 6 Euros and worth it. Wi-Fi is expensive, 7 Euros for 2 hours.
