One of our favourite things about Scoti is the stunning floor-to-ceiling frescos in the living room. If you can tear yourself away from them and take the elevator up, you’ll find the rooms to be nice and pleasant. They have basic decor but they’re sunny and well-maintained. Back facing rooms are quieter and have quaint views of rooftops and residences. All rooms have a fan, telephone and large, immaculate private bathrooms. There’s also a TV lounge, free Wi-Fi and breakfast for 5 Euros. Scoti’s location is fancy, on Florence’s fashionable shopping street lined with designer stores. The famed Ponte Vecchio Bridge and the Uffizi are a short walk away. Two thumbs up for Scoti.

If you want frills Cestelli is not for you, but if you want clean, good sized and affordable rooms in a great location then this is your kind of place. Run by a warm and knowledgeable Japanese-Italian couple, the 8 room Cestilli sits near the Ponte Vecchio Bridge and the Uffizi. The rooms are without a TV, telephone, air-conditioner or Wi-Fi, but they’re tastefully furnished and romantic: mood lighting, aromatic candles, antique furniture and beds and chandeliers. Rooms come with private or shared bathrooms and all bathrooms are spotless. There’s no elevator or breakfast. Food tip: For excellent Tuscan food, head to Trattoria Nella at Via delle Terme 19.

Sani is not easy to find, but once you do you’ll like this sweet B&B and its quirky owner. It’s sits on the 3rd floor of a lovely building (with elevator) very close to Dante’s House. The B&B is low-priced but what you get is impressive, spotless, well-maintained rooms with charming décor, comfortable wrought iron beds and a host of amenities: TV, air-conditioning (extra charge), fridge, tea kettle, free Wi-Fi and clean private bathrooms. Some rooms have nice views and the location is super, near Piazza Della Signoria and the Duomo. The included breakfast is served in a café close by. Note: The owner is at the B&B only at certain hours, so call ahead.

Bargello is housed on the 3rd floor of an old building without elevator. But it’s worth the climb. With just 6 rooms it’s intimate, with great common areas that are nicely suited for meeting people. The tasty included breakfast is served at a communal table in the kitchen, the rooftop terrace makes for a cool wine sipping spot and the homely living room has free internet, books and comfortable sofas. The rooms are cozy and quaint, with warm lighting, silk duvets, rugs, printed cushions and wood beam ceilings. All rooms have a TV, telephone, air-conditioning, free Wi-Fi and spotless private bathrooms. The location is the clincher, a few blocks from Piazza Della Signoria and the Duomo.

Don’t be put off by the dimly lit staircase that leads to this family run pension. It’s friendly and offers huge rooms in an enviable location: just off the lively Piazza Della Signoria and a short walk away from the Duomo and the Uffizi. The décor is sparse and old fashioned but the rooms are clean. The rooms have only a fan and come with a private or shared bathroom. Internet and Wi-Fi is free. There’s no elevator or breakfast but the helpful staff will help you with your luggage and also recommend some nice cafes for breakfast. Cristina is a good option if you’re not too picky.

Academy scores high on both quality and location. It has top notch dorms and private rooms (one with a private bathroom) steps away from the Duomo. Both are spic and span, spacious, quiet and nicely done up with soothing colours and simple yet elegant furniture. There’s also air-conditioning, big windows and high ceilings. All bathrooms are impeccable. The dorms have single beds instead of bunks and only 4 to 6 beds, so there’s a nice intimate vibe. There’s also a lovely inner courtyard, a small terrace, a cozy TV lounge and free internet. A good breakfast is included. Bonus: Free snacks and wine in the evening. Academy is how hostels should be.

San Giovanni’s location is one of the best in Florence. It sits right on the corner of Piazza San Giovanni, so you’re literally yards away from the Duomo. Not surprisingly, most of its rooms have fantastic views of the piazza and the Duomo. The rooms are spotless, with comfortable beds, homely décor and high ceiling (some with lovely 16th century frescos). The rooms vary in size and are sans amenities; except for a fan, a few rooms have an air-conditioner. Rooms with private or shared bathrooms are available. Wi-Fi is free. There’s no breakfast but the cafes and restaurants are at your doorstep. San Giovanni is recommended.

Wonderful owners, a great location and simple, clean rooms make Dali a winner. There’s also an elevator and free parking. Bliss. The Duomo is steps away and the owners have some nice suggestions on where to eat. The rooms are good sized and comfortable. Street facing rooms have views of the Duomo, but those facing the courtyard are quieter. Rooms come with a TV, fan and fridge. A few rooms have private bathrooms, the rest share and have a sink. Internet is free. There’s no breakfast but there are complimentary croissants and a tea / coffee kettle in the room. Besides, there are plenty of cafes around.

Aldini is one of Florence’s best value for money deals. For a reasonable price you get a killer location (only a few meters away from the Duomo), a decent included breakfast, free internet, an attentive staff, elevator and huge rooms that come with a TV, telephone, air-conditioning, mini bar and clean private bathrooms. The décor is simple and the furniture needs updating but the rooms are spotless. The hotel is on the 3rd floor on a lively street so expect some noise if you have a street facing room. Also expect clear and nice views of the Duomo from some of the rooms. Food tip: The yummy salt cod in tomato sauce at the tiny Fiaschetteria Nuvoli (Piazza dell’olio 15) is a must try.

Orchidea is a fantastic place to stay if you don’t mind sharing bathrooms. The 7 rooms, all with sinks, share 3 bathrooms and 2 showers, which are spotless. The rooms are airy thanks to the large windows and the décor is homely and charming. 3 of the rooms overlook a tranquil green garden, while one of the rooms has a huge balcony. The rest overlook a cute but at times noisy street. Rooms only have a ceiling fan. The location is juicy, near the Duomo, the bars and the restaurants. Wi-Fi is free. There’s no breakfast but complimentary tea and coffee is available all day.

Bavaria is housed on the 2nd floor (without elevator) of a 16th century palace in the heart of the city. And the prices are not princely. The rooms are huge and filled with character. The décor varies from room to room; you’ll find painted ceilings, eye catching floor tiles, frescoed walls, and antique furniture pieces. But you won’t find a TV or an air-conditioner, only a fan.  Some rooms have views of the Duomo, balconies with chairs and private bathrooms. The rooms that share bathrooms have a sink; a few even have shower stalls. Wi-Fi is free, breakfast is included and the location is a fabulous: just minutes from the Duomo and Piazza Della Signoria.

Leonardo has some of the cheapest rooms in Florence and a location that allows you to walk just about everywhere. Rooms have private or shared bathrooms, which are good sized. Internet is free and there’s no breakfast or a kitchen. Overall, Leonardo doesn’t have many facilities or common areas but the price, location and a friendly, eager to please owner make it worthwhile.

Maxim’s rooms are plain, greatly vary in size and the bathrooms are small and could do with some updating. On the brighter side, they’re clean and superbly located: on the popular shopping street of Via Calzaiuoli, a tiny walk from the Duomo and Piazza Della Signoria. All rooms have a TV, telephone, air-conditioning and private bathrooms. Rooms either face the street or a quiet courtyard. Internet is free and a decent breakfast is included. The hotel is on the 3rd and 4th floor and the elevator takes you only to the 3rd floor. Ask for a big room and you’ll be fairly happy at Maxim.

Nicely located near the train station and the San Lorenzo market, Archi Rossi is one Florence’s most popular budget options. They come with a TV, air-conditioning, fridge, a computer, free Wi-Fi and clean private bathrooms. All dorms have en-suite bathrooms, except one. There’s also free internet, free walking tours, free breakfast, cheap dinners, a lovely outdoor garden, cool graffiti covered hallways, laundry room, guest kitchen, TV lounge and a friendly staff. Bargellino is perfect if you want a good night’s sleep away from the tourists. It’s set in a quiet residential area and has comfortable rooms. It also has a lovely terrace which is a great spot for a morning coffee or an end of the day drink. The rooms are large and the décor is homely, with a nice mix of antiques and antique furniture. All rooms have a fan or air-conditioning and free Wi-Fi; some also have a fridge, coffee maker and a private bathroom. The rest come with a sink and shower or a sink and bidet. Our favourite rooms are the ones that open on to the terrace. There’s no breakfast but the hotel recommended Bar Fibbi whips up an excellent breakfast.  Bargellino is an absolute gem.

All rooms face a peaceful courtyard and most have views of the Duomo, some even have cute balconies and original frescos on the ceiling. All this only a quick walk away from the Accademia Gallery and the Duomo. The décor in the deluxe rooms is more charming compared to the standard rooms, with lovely hand painted old style furniture. Old Bridge is located on the other side of the Arno River. But it’s just 2 minutes away from the Ponte Vecchio Bridge and gives you quick access to the centre. The rooms are not the biggest but they’re clean and well-equipped, with pleasant decor. All rooms have a TV, air-conditioning, fridge, free Wi-Fi and small private bathrooms. A few rooms face a wall, so ask for a street facing room if you like it bright. One double room has a balcony. Note: Check-in and breakfast (7 Euro) is at a sister hotel, la Scaletta, across the street, which also has a terrace restaurant with excellent food and views. By the way, if you’re willing to splurge, Scaletta is a great option.
