Set in a Victorian house on a quiet, picturesque street, Hampstead Village is charming and quirky. It’s packed with antiques, books, paintings and cute hand-made furniture. Housed in an elegant Victorian building, without elevator, Luna & Simone is an excellent option. Its 36 rooms are comfortable and squeaky clean. All rooms have a TV, tea and coffee making facilities and neat private bathrooms with one of the best showers you’ll stand under. The staff is friendly, Wi-Fi is free and a very good breakfast is included. The restaurants, supermarkets and Pimlico tube station are close by. Two thumbs up for Luna and Simone. Food tip: For some of the best Turkish food in town, head to Kazan at 93 Wilton Rd.

The Victoria tube station is a short walk away. No elevator. Cherry Court is not perfect but if you’re looking for a clean and cheap place, it fits the bill well.

Cardiff is worth it for the location alone. Situated close to Paddington station, it gives you access to the long distance trains, 4 tube lines and the Heathrow Express. Also, you’re surrounded by good eating and drinking options. The rooms and private bathrooms are small but clean. Rooms have a TV, telephone and tea/coffee making facilities. Rooms facing the front have nice views of the garden square. Breakfast is included, an elevator is not. Wi-Fi is free. Cardiff is good value for money in a super central location.

Rhodes gives you more for your buck than most hotels in its class. Nicely located near the Paddington station, Hyde Park and the restaurants, it has a wide range of rooms, including a family room with bunk beds. It sits opposite a nice park minutes away from Paddington station and scores of restaurant and pubs. It may be housed in a drab building but Lancaster Hall is a good, solid option in a charming area. Located opposite the Kensington Gardens and near the Lancaster Gate tube station, it has neat, comfortable and decent sized rooms. Oxford offers cheap rooms in a good location: near Kensington Gardens, Lancaster Gate tube station, and Paddington station. The catch? Small rooms, small bathrooms and no elevator (stairs are steep). Ridgemount’s owners and staff are some of the nicest and most helpful people you’ll meet in London. But that’s not the only good thing about the hotel. The small rooms are spic and span (most have private bathrooms), the prices are reasonable, the included breakfast is yummy, the Goodge Street tube station is a short walk away, the lobby has free tea, coffee and internet and the nearby Charlotte Street is full of nice restaurants. We heartily approve. Note: There’s no elevator. But hey, you can’t have everything.
