Staying close to the Louvre doesn’t have to cost an arm and a jambe. De Rouen, located just minutes away from the famous museum, offers very basic and bright rooms at seriously cheap prices. Understandably, the rooms are not packed with amenities, except for a TV and free Wi-Fi. Rooms come with private or shared bathrooms. For a nice view, ask for a street facing room on the 3rd or 4th floor. A word of caution for the easily tired, the hotel doesn’t have an elevator. Breakfast, however, is available for 6 Euros. Bonus: a friendly staff.

Montpensier is very good value for money in an expensive area. The location is super, steps away from the Louvre and the Musée du Louvre metro. The rooms are clean, comfortable and good sized. All rooms have a TV, telephone and neat private bathrooms. Cheaper rooms with shared bathrooms are available. The lobby has free Wi-Fi. Breakfast is 9 Euros and not worth it. We suggest you hit one of the patisseries in the area. Food tip: For the best hot chocolate in Paris head to Angelina close by (226 Rue de Rivoli).

Sitting on the tip of Île de la Cité between the Lourve and the Left Bank, Henri IV is the most romantically located budget hotel in Paris. We recommend getting one of the renovated rooms which are spotless. The rooms are basic, there’s no TV or telephone, but you have great views. Not a bad trade off. All rooms have windows facing Place Dauphine and most have private bathrooms. 3 rooms have balconies. Breakfast is included. No elevator, 6 floors, steep staircase. Henry IV is sweet but it’s not for everyone.

If you’re lucky enough to be in Room No. 41 keep your camera handy for a picture of the Eiffel Tower. Cheaper rooms with shared bathrooms are also available. Note: rooms on the first floor facing the street can be noisy. Breakfast is 6 Euros and the Cluny La Sorbonne metro is close by. Two thumbs up for St. Pierre.

du Commerce has 32 basic rooms at rock bottom prices in a good location. The catch? It feels like more like a hostel than a hotel. Only 2 twin rooms and one superior room have private bathrooms, the rest use shared facilities. Rooms do not have a TV, except the superior room which has a TV, air-conditioning and a fridge. Guests can use the kitchen to cook and store food, not a bad idea considering they don’t serve breakfast. Internet is free. No elevator. Overall, a good bet for young travellers on a tight budget.

Les Argonautes puts you right in the middle of the Left Bank action and meters away from the Notre Dame. The narrow street is full of bars, cafes and of course, people, so rooms on the lower floors can be noisy. Rooms are clean and have a telephone and free Wi-Fi. Most have full private bathrooms, a few have a shower and share toilets. Breakfast is 5 Euros. But if you want your croissants oven fresh, try the bakery around the corner, Le Bougelerie de Papa. Rooms have private or shared bathrooms. Rooms at the back face the courtyard and are quieter. Breakfast is 5.50 Euros. de Nesle’s 20 rooms do not have TVs or telephones but they have something even better: charm and loads of character. Every room has a different theme and each one is equally funky, with large matching murals. Some rooms have balconies overlooking the lovely courtyard garden. The hotel also has less expensive rooms with shared bathrooms. There’s no elevator or breakfast. But thankfully, de Nesle’s is located down the road from the cafés and bakeries. Situated opposite the Jardin Luxembourg, the rooms at du Palais have a warm cozy feel to them. Maybe it’s the tasteful decor, maybe it’s the beautiful residential building it’s housed in. All rooms have a TV and free Wi-Fi. The Notre-Dame-des-Champs metro is close by. Breakfast is 5 Euros. How we wish it was served in the lovely green courtyard.
