An apartment converted into a hotel, Boccaccio feels more like a home than a hotel.  The location is hard to beat, near the Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps and the Barbarini metro. The 8 rooms are clean, with charming decor. Rooms come with private or shared bathrooms (though all rooms have a sink with a mirror). There is no TV or telephone, but there’s wooden flooring, high ceiling and a writing desk. Not a bad trade off. Wi-Fi is free. There’s no breakfast, but the restaurants and cafes are just steps away.

It’s worth staying at the Mimosa for the location alone. It’s a stone throw away from Piazza Navona, the Pantheon, the restaurants and the shopping. The hotel’s 11 rooms are basic (without TV or telephone) and the decor is nothing to write home about. That said, the rooms are spotless, comfortable, decent sized and come with air-conditioning. You can choose a room with a private or shared bathroom (private bathrooms are on the smaller side). There’s no elevator, Wi-Fi is free and a basic breakfast is included.

Located on a quiet residential street, Arena is a charming guest house run by Vincent and Barbara, the most helpful couple you’ll meet in Rome. The Paba has a lot going for it. The location is prime (just around the corner from the Colosseum), the service is helpful and the rooms squeaky clean, spacious and well-equipped. For a nice view of Via Cavour, get the suite, which has a balcony. Breakfast is included and is served in your room. You know why? There’s no breakfast room.
