Tucked away on a quiet pedestrian street in the atmospheric Barrio Santa Cruz district, Dona Trinidad is a little gem. Quaint and unpretentious, its spic and span, no frills rooms are spread across 3 floors around a charming Andalusian style inner patio. The prices are small and the rooms are decent sized, with simple, tasteful décor: red bedspreads and curtains and beige walls adorned with ornate tiles. Most rooms face the inner patio, while a few face the street and have small balconies. All rooms come with an air-conditioning, free Wi-Fi and private bathrooms. There’s elevator or breakfast. The cathedral, Alcazar and the tapas bars are a mini walk away. Food tip: For some of the best tapas in the city, try Modesto at c/ Cano y Cueto 5.

Set on a pretty square in a pretty building, Del Laurel played host to the 19th-century playwright José Zorilla when he wrote his famous play, Don Juan Tenorio. Today the hotel boosts of one of the city’s best tapas restaurants with a nice outdoor dining area on the square. Inner rooms are quieter but those overlooking the side street and the square are brighter. A few of the rooms have cute balconies with plants. The décor is simple and all rooms have a TV, telephone, air-conditioning and immaculate private bathrooms with a great power shower. Wi-Fi is free and the included breakfast is super. So is the location: a few blocks from the cathedral and Alcazar.

Vergara is not for everyone. It has no breakfast, no private bathrooms, no amenities and it’s on the 2nd floor without elevator. The 11 rooms only come with free Wi-Fi and share 5 bathrooms between them. Despite all this we love this quirky and colourful pension. It has pleasant rooms in a quaint 15th century building close to all the action. The rooms are squeaky clean, spacious and airy, with eclectic décor and exposed brick walls. Street facing rooms have balconies and the shared bathrooms are neat and well-maintained. The small internal patio is full of plants and Moorish style wall hangings. Bonus: Wallet friendly prices.

Located down the road from Pension Vergara, Alcantara has a fantastic staff and all its rooms sit around a leafy inner courtyard. So you can be in the midst of the lively bars and restaurants and still get a goodnight’s sleep. The quiet rooms are largish and impeccably clean, with simple, soothing décor: floral curtains, olive green furniture and headboards, crisp white bed covers and wooden flooring. They’re also well-equipped. All rooms have a TV, telephone, free Wi-Fi, air-conditioning and private bathrooms. The 5 Euro breakfast is good and can be taken in the courtyard; internet is 1.5 Euros for 30 minutes. The sights are nearby and the flamenco show downstairs is excellent.

The family run Cordoba has a very tranquil and cozy vibe. It’s sits on a quiet alley in a charming traditional building with a tiled and fern tree filled courtyard in the centre. The 12 rooms are basic and sparsely done up but they’re neat, spacious and inexpensive. 3 double rooms have balconies and 1 single room has a good sized terrace with a table and chairs. All rooms come with a TV, air-conditioning and clean private or shared bathrooms. There’s free Wi-Fi, internet and a guest fridge in the common room. There’s no elevator or breakfast but there are plenty of eating options close by. Note: The pension only accepts cash and you might fall in love with the owner’s cute dog. Cordoba is recommended.

Down to earth rates and a fantastic location are Dona Lina’s biggest selling points. It’s just off a pretty square surrounded by restaurants and cafes, and the Alcazar is around the corner. The rooms are tidy, basic and vary in shape and size; a few are corridor style, long and narrow. So ask head. All rooms have air-conditioning, free Wi-Fi and private bathrooms. Front facing rooms have balconies. The décor is tame, compared to the common areas, especially the inner patio which is colourful and charming, with ceramic tile walls, plants and wooden benches. Breakfast is included. The hotel has a restaurant but there are better options close by. Dona Lina’s price and location are hard to beat.

The rooms at Goya lack charm, but they are some of the cleanest rooms you’ll stay in. Besides, they boast of an excellent location: on a street that leads to the cathedral, which is a short walk away. So is the Alcazar and the tapas bars. The rooms vary in size and have a sterile feel, with spartan décor and marble flooring. The patio and hallways, on the other hand, are charming, with a nice mix of the modern and traditional. The inside rooms can be a little dark, so if you want more light, get a room facing the street (some of them have balconies). All rooms have a TV, telephone, air-conditioning and spotless private bathrooms. Wi-Fi is free and there’s no breakfast, which is not a problem, the cafes are just down the road.

One of the best things about Las Cruces is that it’s quiet despite being in the heart of Barrio Santa Cruz. It sits on a small picturesque square near the Alcazar and steps away from the tapas bars and flamenco shows. The rooms, built around 2 tranquil patios, are compact but they’re top quality: new, spotless and comfortable. Some rooms face the square and have enclosed balconies. The décor is minimal and eye pleasing: purple and off white walls, sleek bed lamps, wrought iron beds and terracotta tiles. All rooms have a TV, air-conditioning and clean private bathrooms. The hotel also has a lovely rooftop terrace which is ideal for relaxing with a glass of vino. Wi-Fi and internet is free. The hotel doesn’t serve breakfast.

Oasis is fun, spotless and centrally located. The dorms (4 to 8 beds) and private rooms are airy and stylishly done up, while the common areas are ideal for meeting fellow travellers. We especially love the rooftop terrace which has a small pool (yes, a pool), sun loungers, sitting area, kitchen and fabulous views. The dorms and private rooms have air-conditioning and come with private or shared bathrooms, both are large and spotless. There’s also loads of free stuff: Wi-Fi, internet at the cozy lounge, welcome drink at the bar, tea / coffee all day and a good breakfast. The hostel also organises free tapas and flamenco tours. Towels are extra charge.

Simon’s location is one of the best in the city; it’s close to Plaza Nueva, the Maestranza bullring, the cathedral, the tapas bars and the lively Barrio Santa Cruz. The hotel also has loads of old style charm, especially in the common areas.  You’ll find a lovely inner courtyard, huge gilt-framed paintings, ornate tiles, antiques and grand marble staircases. The rooms are simple and compact, unless you get one of the superior rooms which are large, with nice Andalusian style décor, including dark wood furniture and stained glass windows. There’s no TV in the rooms but there’s air-conditioning and tidy private bathrooms. Street facing rooms have balconies. Wi-Fi is free, internet is 1 Euro for 15 minutes and breakfast is 5 Euros. Two thumbs up for Simon.

The welcoming Abanico is one of the most charming budget hotels in the city. Housed in a classic Seville mansion near Plaza Alfalfa, its Andalusian style arched courtyard and corridors are calming and eye pleasing: classy furniture, stunning ceramic tiles, ornate mirrors, potted plants, big carpets and stained glass windows. The rooms are equally impressive; no room is the same in décor and layout. But all are spacious, colourful and tastefully done-up. Rooms come with a TV, telephone, air-conditioning and well-equipped private bathrooms. Some street facing rooms have tiny balconies but courtyard facing ones are quieter. Wi-Fi is free, breakfast is 6 Euro. There’s free coffee, tea, juice and cookies available all day and the tapas bars are nearby. Food tip: Want tapas with an Italian twist? Try Bar Alfalfa at Calle Candilejo 1. It’s lip smacking.

Run by two friendly and helpful brothers, San Francisco has some of the cheapest rooms in Seville. And the best part is, they’re right in the centre of town. You’re minutes away from Plaza Nueva, Barrio Santa Cruz, the cathedral and the eateries. Sure, the rooms are not the biggest and the décor is dated but they’re spotless and come with a TV, air-conditioning and clean private bathrooms. A few rooms have tiny balconies and some open onto a small terrace with nice views of the cathedral. Wi-Fi is free and there’s no breakfast. The Moorish tiles on the wall and the staircase are picture worthy. San Francisco is an excellent budget option.

The setting of San Andres is sweet. It sits on a beautiful square with orange trees and is steps away from cafes frequented by the locals. The shopping street of Calle Sierpes is nearby. 16 of the 25 rooms overlook either a Moorish style patio or a sitting area where you can have a drink or a meal from the in-house restaurant and bar. The rest of the rooms overlook the square and have balconies, 2 rooms even have private terraces. The décor is simple: warm colours and dark wood furniture. Most rooms have colourful tiled flooring and stained glass bathrooms doors. All rooms come with a TV, telephone, air-conditioning, free Wi-Fi and private bathrooms. The hotel has a rooftop terrace and breakfast is included. Note: Patio facing rooms are not very airy.

The first thing you notice when you walk into Sevilla is the colour yellow. It dominates the lobby and hallways which, by the way, are tastefully done up. So are the rooms, they’re modern and airy, with bright décor: sleek furniture, crisp white sheets and red ceilings with chandeliers. The location is good, on a cute square close to the centre and to loads of restaurants, cafes and shopping. The rooms face the square or a leafy courtyard. All rooms have a TV, telephone, air-conditioning, free Wi-Fi and clean private bathrooms. Some street facing rooms have balconies or large terraces (recommended). If you’re looking for something cute, clean and central, Callejon fits the bill well. The smallish rooms are well-maintained and decently done-up, with beige walls, red striped headboards, floral bedspreads and terracotta tiled floors. Rooms on the grounds floor have windows that open on the street, so unless you like peeping Toms ask for a room on a higher floor. All rooms have a TV, air-conditioning, free Wi-Fi and private bathrooms. Some have balconies. The inner patio is not bad but we prefer the rooftop terrace which has nice views of the Giralda. Internet is free, so is tea and coffee. The hotel doesn’t serve breakfast. Barrio Santa Cruz, the cathedral, the restaurants and the shopping are all a quick walk away.
