Located near the waterbus stop and the lively bars and restaurants of Campo Santa Margherita, Tivoli offers fantastic value. The prices are reasonable, the service is flawless and the included breakfast is good. There’s also a lovely inner garden which is a nice spot to gather your breath after a long day. The rooms are a bit dated and not the brightest, but they’re spotless and have a TV, telephone, air-conditioning and neat private or shared bathrooms. One double room, facing a small back alley, has a balcony with nice views. Internet is free, there’s no elevator. Two thumbs up for Tivoli.

Foscari has a 1 am curfew, the 3 Euro breakfast is below par, the rooms are small, there’s no TV or air-conditioning and the décor is old fashioned. Now the good news, the rooms are squeaky clean, comfortable and inexpensive. Foscari is also ideally located for exploring the city. It’s a minute away from the waterbus stop on the Grand Canal and close to Campo Santa Margherita. Rooms come with fans and private or shared bathrooms. You can choose a room overlooking the street or the surrounding gardens. The latter are quieter. Wi-Fi is free. There’s no elevator.

If you get a room at this old restored apartment turned into a B&B, consider yourself lucky. It has only 3 rooms and one of the best locations if you want to experience local Venetian life. It’s meters away from the fish, fruit and vegetable markets, local restaurants and the Grand Canal. Besides, Rialto Bridge is a mini walk away. The rooms are impeccable and have elegant modern décor. One room has a private bathroom, two others share. Both bathrooms are clean. There’s a common kitchen, living room with a TV and a nice terrace. Wi-Fi is free, breakfast is included. Marinare is the kind of place you’d want to keep a secret.

Alex has a delightful staff, a central location and dated but oddly likeable Venetian décor. It sits near the magnificent Basilica dei Frari and is a short walk away from the Rialto Bridge. There’s a supermarket across the street and some good restaurants close by. The rooms vary in size and are without a TV or air-conditioning. But they’re tidy and have ceiling fans; a few have small balconies with side canal views. Cheaper rooms with shared bathrooms are also available. There’s no elevator. Wi-Fi is free and breakfast is included. Alex is not perfect but we love it.

L’Imbarcadero is not cheap for a hostel but then good hostels in Venice are as rare as a female gondolier. And L’Imbarcadero is certainly good, and friendly. Located on the Grand Canal right opposite the waterbus stop, its rooms and dorms are spacious and tastefully done up. Dorms have single beds instead of bunk beds, which is a nice touch. There’s no TV or air-conditioning. A few rooms have private bathrooms and most have great views of the Grand Canal, so does one of the dorms. There’s a TV lounge and a kitchen for guest use. Internet is free, breakfast is included and a decent dinner is available for 5 Euros.
