The family run Schweizer is a homely pension located just a short walk away from Stephansdom and Graben (one of Vienna’s most famous streets). The 11 rooms are squeaky clean and comfortable, with oriental rugs and parquet flooring. All rooms come with a TV and telephone. Most have private bathrooms; a few share facilities but do have a sink in the room. Being green friendly, the pension only uses energy saving bulbs and serves organic breakfast, which is included. Overall, an excellent value for money in a central location.

Lerner is small, cozy and convenient. Located a few steps away from a supermarket (Billa) and a short walk away from most attractions, it offers 7 rooms which are clean, quiet and of decent size. The décor is functional and the amenities are decent: TV, telephone and free Wi-Fi. Most of the rooms have private bathrooms (clean), except for 2 which share facilities. The staff is nice, so is the included breakfast. Food tip: Neu Deli nearby (Wipplingerstrasse 20) serves some excellent curries and is very popular with the locals.

Dr. Geissler’s rooms are basic with simple decor but they’re clean and well located: on a quiet side street close to Stephansdom, Graben and the Schwedenplatz metro. The rooms spread across 3 floors, have a TV, telephone and spotless private bathrooms (cheaper rooms with only shower/bath or sink are also available). Room sizes vary, so ask ahead if you want a large room. The included breakfast is good. Dr. Geissler’s warmth and inexpensive rooms make it a good bet. Bonus: There’s an internet café next door.

The views from Apartment Sacher are some of the best in Vienna. Not surprising since you’ll be on the 7th floor right next to Stephansdom. Run by the friendly Sacher family, the one and two bedroom apartments are an excellent option to hotels. They’re spotless, large, elegantly done up and have floor to ceiling windows, apart from a TV, telephone, free Wi-Fi, a fully equipped kitchen and clean private bathroom. There is no breakfast but the restaurants and cafes are at your doorstep. So is the Stephansplatz metro.

A guesthouse in the Benedictine monastery complex, Benediktushaus is an oasis of peace in the centre of the city. All 21 rooms, except one, face a lovely inner courtyard and understandably, there’s no TV in the rooms. The rooms are simple but spotless and come with a telephone, a writing desk and renovated private bathrooms. The arched lobby and corridors add to the charm. There’s free Wi-Fi on the 1st floor and the included breakfast is good. Most attractions are a short walk away. We’re big fans of Benediktushaus.

Austria is a gem but it’s an expensive gem. It makes the underhundred list thanks to the economy rooms (with shared facilities) which are a bargain. The location is first rate (just minutes away from Stephansdom, the Schwedenplatz metro and the cafes), the rooms are clean, well-maintained and loaded with amenities (TV, telephone, free Wi-Fi, mini-bar, tea and coffee making facilities), the bathrooms are spacious (some have bathtubs), the staff is wonderful and the included breakfast is very good. Much like the hotel itself.

Neuer Markt’s rooms and bathrooms are on the smaller side, the décor is old fashioned and the prices are not exactly cheap but its location makes up for it. It’s one of the best in the city and places you close to Stephansdom, the Opera, Museum District, the Hofburg Palace and the restaurants. The rooms are clean and come with a TV, telephone and private bathrooms (cheaper rooms with shared toilets are also available). Breakfast is included. Neuer Markt is worth it for its location. Bonus: A very friendly staff.

K&T gives you a taste of Viennese apartment living. Owned by the friendly Tina, the 3rd floor apartment (sans elevator) has 3 big rooms with high ceilings, simple homespun décor and neat private bathrooms. Rooms have a TV and can sleep up to 5 people. The location is lively, just off Mariahilferstrasse (Vienna’s shopping street) and close to restaurants, Neubaugasse metro and not far from Ringstrasse. Internet is free. There’s no breakfast but the cafes are close by. K&T is an experience and we highly recommend it.

Haydn is a good solid budget option located in the heart of Vienna’s shopping area. It’s also a short walk away from the Museum District and the Neubaugasse metro. And if you ignore the outdated décor, the rooms aren’t too bad either. Spotless, spacious and cozy, they come with a TV, telephone, mini bar, air-conditioning and private bathrooms (some with a bathtub). Wi-Fi is 5 Euros per day, breakfast is included. Food tip: For the best open sandwiches in Vienna, head to Trzesniewski (Mariahilferstrasse 95).

Rooms come with private or shared bathrooms (rooms with private bathrooms have a TV, radio, mini bar). Internet is free and breakfast is included. Wombat’s is as good as a hostel can get. It’s safe, has a fun vibe, a cool lounge, a great basement bar and is close to a supermarket and the metro (Westbanhoff). The double rooms and dorms (4 to 6 beds) are clean, comfortable and have bathrooms in the dorms. Women only dorms are available. The décor is simple yet modern, think Ikea. Wi-Fi is free, internet is 0.50 Euro for 20 minutes, breakfast is 3.90 Euros, towels come with a 5 Euros deposit and you get a free beer when you walk in. That clinches the deal.

And believe it or not, the price includes free internet, towels, laundry, toiletries (including moisturizer, toothpaste and tampons), an umbrella, a city guide, lunch, dinner, breakfast, apples, tea/coffee (all day). How do they do it? We have no idea.

The quaint Pension Baltic is one of the best deals in Vienna. It offers dirt cheap rooms on a quiet street not too far from the city centre. And cheap doesn’t mean shoddy. The décor is functional and the rooms are basic but they’re clean, spacious and homely. Some rooms even have a TV, telephone and balconies with nice views of the back garden. Rooms with and without private bathrooms are available. Breakfast is 5 Euros, there’s no internet and the hotel accepts only cash. We don’t care, we still like Baltic.
